Driver in court over death of rugby great Gerhard Mans

Windhoek resident Jafet Paulus is accused of having negligently caused the death of Mans, who died after he was struck by a car driven by Paulus. Mans was cycling on the Western Bypass highway north of Windhoek when he was hit and fatally injured. He was 60 years old. Paulus appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate's Court in Katutura on Friday. Magistrate Ilge Rheent postponed his case to 22 July for further investigations to be carried out. Paulus remained in custody after public prosecutor Sirka Nangoro informed the magistrate that the state is opposed to the granting of bail to him at this stage. She said the state feared that he would try to flee if released on bail, considering the gravity of the charge he is facing, and that he would interfere with the police's investigations and with witnesses in the matter. Defence lawyer Moses Ikanga said Paulus would formally apply to be granted bail. Mans was a member and captain of Namibia's national rugby team during the second half of the 1980s and early 1990s and was considered one of the country's greatest rugby players.
